KHDA and ADEK School Ratings Explained: What the Grades Really Mean

When you browse UAE schools you will see labels like “Outstanding,” “Very Good,” “Good” or “Acceptable.” These come from official government inspections — KHDA in Dubai and ADEK in Abu Dhabi — and they are one of the most useful shortcuts for comparing schools.

Who inspects UAE schools

In Dubai, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) inspects private schools through its DSIB framework. In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) runs an equivalent programme. Both send trained inspectors into schools to observe lessons, review results and judge leadership.

The rating scale

  • Outstanding — exceptional quality across the board.
  • Very Good — strong, above expectations.
  • Good — the expected standard for UAE schools.
  • Acceptable — meets minimum requirements.
  • Weak / Very Weak — below the required standard.

What inspectors actually measure

Ratings weigh students’ attainment and progress, personal development, teaching and assessment, curriculum, and the quality of leadership — not just exam results. A school can hold strong results yet score lower on leadership or inclusion.

An important 2026 caveat

Full Dubai inspections were last conducted in 2023–24 and were then paused for two academic years. That means a rating you see today may be a year or two old. Treat it as a strong signal, but confirm the inspection year and look for recent parent feedback too.

How to use ratings

Use ratings to shortlist, not to decide outright. Filter for Outstanding and Very Good schools, then weigh curriculum, fees and commute. See our full selection guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an Outstanding KHDA rating mean?

It is the highest grade, signalling exceptional quality across attainment, teaching, personal development and leadership.

Are KHDA ratings up to date in 2026?

Not always. Full Dubai inspections were paused after 2023–24, so some ratings may be a year or two old. Always check the inspection year.

Is a Good school a bad choice?

No. Good is the expected standard for UAE schools and describes a solid, well-run school.
