School Admissions in the UAE: Timelines, Documents and How to Apply (2026)

Securing a school place in the UAE is as much about timing as it is about choice. Popular year groups at sought-after schools can fill months in advance, and a missing document can stall an otherwise strong application.

Here is how the process works in 2026.

The admissions calendar

The main UAE academic year starts in late August or September, with a second common intake in April. Many schools accept applications year-round, but the best availability is several months before the term you want. If you are relocating, start as soon as your move is confirmed.

Documents you will need

  • Child’s passport and UAE residence visa (or visit visa if mid-relocation)
  • Emirates ID (once issued)
  • Birth certificate (often attested)
  • Recent passport photos
  • Previous school reports and, for older students, a Transfer Certificate (TC)
  • Immunisation / vaccination records

The application process, step by step

1) Shortlist schools and check seat availability. 2) Submit the application form and documents. 3) Sit an assessment or interview. 4) Receive an offer. 5) Pay the registration fee and deposit to secure the place. 6) Complete enrolment before term starts.

Assessments and interviews

Younger children usually have an informal play-based assessment; older students may sit tests in English, maths and sometimes science (for example CAT4). It is a fit check, not a pass/fail exam — prepare your child gently.

Fees due at offer stage

When you accept, expect to pay a registration fee and often a deposit that is credited to tuition. See our fees guide for typical amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I apply for a school place in the UAE?

Several months before your target term. The main intake is August/September with a second intake around April, and popular grades fill early.

What documents are needed for school admission?

Typically the child’s passport and visa, Emirates ID, birth certificate, passport photos, previous school reports or a Transfer Certificate, and immunisation records.

Do UAE schools have entrance exams?

Most run an age-appropriate assessment — play-based for young children, or tests in English and maths for older students. It assesses fit and level, not pass/fail.
